How to get your article into The Review

Guidelines and Helpful Tips

At NADFAS Review we are always delighted to receive information about your Society activities. By following these simple guidelines, you can maximise your chances of getting your Society featured. Do remember that the Editor's decision is final!

Society Anniversaries

Under Society news we try and list significant Society anniversaries, giving brief details. If space allows we may print a picture. Please ensure that all names are legibly captioned left to right. If you would like your photographs returned, please put a return address on the back.

Society Study Days and Trips

When writing about these items, always remember our Editor is looking for stories that are newsworthy and that will be of interest to the whole membership. Pictures of a Society group will be of interest locally but a good picture that includes an item that you have been studying or a picturesque view of where you have been will make it a more interesting feature for readers everywhere.

If you are submitting photographs that are professionally taken, check that you have permission to reproduce them. An artist's painting might be out of copyright but the image, if supplied by a professional photographer or institute, may not be. Downloading an image from the Internet might be fine for your own personal use, but may break copyright laws if published in The Review.

Society and Area Projects

These are of great interest to our membership and often inspire other Societies
to develop their own projects. Grant giving to local schools, galleries or museums, and voluntary work undertaken by Church Recorders, Heritage Volunteers, and Young Arts help promote visual art and heritage conservation in a more public way. If you have an interesting story to tell, why not also consider sending details to your local paper. With articles for The Review, ensure that you convey the key facts in just a couple of paragraphs and illustrate the piece clear and striking photographs.

The reader will want to know the answers to four key questions:
Who, What, Where, When?

For example:
Who? - Your local Society or volunteer group.
What? - Interesting volunteer projects, group visits or Study Days.
Where? - Location such as school or church.
When? - Summer holidays or a specific month etc

This will form the basis of your story and you can expand your details from there.

Remember anecdotes are a nice way to convey the mood of the occasion and add interest to your story. Never assume that people will know what you are talking about, so include a couple of interesting facts. If you have a quote that illuminates the story, then use it.

If you are writing about a Young Arts project and are submitting photographs of children, please get permission from the school or parents, whatever is applicable, and try to be a bit more general with your description.

For example:
Do not name individual children or their age. Much better to say: “Children from Bedwell School “

Format
As a guideline, if you are submitting a Society or news piece, it should be 100 to 150 words long. Submissions should be emailed. If you are emailing photographs these should be sent in 'jpg' or 'tif' format at high resolution (300 dpi). If you do not have access to email then please submit your copy in typed form. Contact details should be included. Finally if your title is interesting and snappy it is more likely to catch the eye of the Editor! Good photographs always help. Remember to make a note of magazine copy dates.

If the Editor contacts you for more information or photographs, please ensure that you get back to her as soon as possible as she has a deadline to work to!

We try and include as many of your news items as possible, so if you aren't lucky the first time try again! We look forward to hearing from you, either by email or post to: NADFAS House. Please mark your envelope 'NADFAS Review'.
