A wrongly placed X leads to a case of mistaken identity!
|
While identifying the many saints in this window by FC Eden in a church in Hertfordshire, the Church Recorder uncovered a mistake in the depiction of Louis IX of France. Around his neck is a collar of shells and double knots with a medallion hanging from it. This was confirmed as being a French order: L’Ordre de St Michel, bearing an image of St Michael killing the dragon. But further research revealed that this order had been founded by Louis XI almost 200 years after the death of Louis IX. Obviously a case of mistaken roman numerals!
