On the wings of morning

This embroidered and painted silk altar cloth from a seaside parish church was commissioned by a widow in memory of her husband whose favourite bible text was ‘If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea even there shall thy hand lead me’. The artist, Belinda Scarlett, who has made altar cloths for Westminster Abbey and Lambeth Palace Chapel, stayed with the commissioner and went out each day to watch the dawn over the sea while she was designing the cloth. The design shows a fisherman setting out at dawn in his boat as well as incorporating the text which is from Psalm 139.
