The Butterfly

There is a touching story behind the unusually large butterfly appearing in this memorial window by Peter Archer in a Hertfordshire church. The widow of the man to whom the window is dedicated was sitting between her two sons at the funeral service when a butterfly landed on her hair. One of her sons removed it to the side of the church. Later in the service it again settled on her hair and the other son removed it. At the end of the service the butterfly was seen flying off into the roof. This made such an impression on all concerned that the widow and the designer decided the incident should be recorded in the window.

A butterfly is, of course, one of the symbols of resurrection and immortality.
