A Wartime Christmas
|
This Christmas Crib from a church in Cumbria was made by German prisoners of war in a camp near the church. It was given to the church in 1946 with a message expressing the gratitude of the prisoners to the vicar and congregation for their “real spirit of Christian brotherhood” The carved wooden figures are two-dimensional and have a joyous vitality which is remarkable in view of the circumstances under which they were made.
